An Open Letter to Homeschool Parents, New and Old
Dear New Homeschooling Parent,
Over the years I’ve watched many friends begin their homeschool journey.
For many of you, it started unexpectedly during the whole COVID thing: schools closed, and suddenly your kids were home. You didn’t choose it in advance—you simply did what you had to do. And then, somewhere along the way, you decided to keep going.
As a veteran homeschool mom, I can only imagine what that must have felt like.
When I planned our homeschool years, I had time to research curricula, outline lessons, and mentally prepare. I can’t fathom sending my child to school one day and waking up the next with the responsibility of educating them at home. Honestly? I think I’d have been hiding under the covers!
So let me say this clearly:
I think you were courageous.
Some of you may have begun homeschooling for other reasons - there are many. And you are brave as well. This homeschool thing is not for the faint-hearted. Trust me!
Regardless of your reason to homeschool, many times new homeschool parents feel like they are not part of “the homeschool club”.
What? Seriously?
Hearing this frustrates me deeply.
Because the truth is: there is no “us.”
There’s no secret club.
No hazing ritual you have to pass. No test you have to ace.
You’re a parent. You love your child. That’s it. You’re in.
So I want to say, loudly and with a smile:
“Welcome to the club. We’re so happy to have you here!”
New homeschool parent, please don’t let anyone suggest you’re “not the same” as those who started earlier. Your journey will have its own ups, downs, and detours—just like everyone else’s.
If you’re:
-Teaching your child yourself or
-Using online classes or
- Working with a tutor or
-Participating in a co-op or
- Combining resources from your local school or any combination of these things
You’re doing enough.
If you start school at 7 a.m. or Noon—
If you follow a strict curriculum or piece things together—
If some days are glorious and others are pure chaos—
You are doing great.
New Homeschool Mom (or Dad):
You are unique.
You are capable.
You are wonderful.
And we’re so glad you’re here.
P.S. Wouldn’t it be cool if we did have a secret handshake? One of those slappy, finger-snapping, dance-y ones? Don’t worry—I’ll let you know the second I come up with something!
